Delays with the opening of the new standard gauge rail line between Melbourne and Albury-Wodonga for intra-state travel must be overcome to ensure the reinstatement of passenger rail services before the end of the 2010 calendar year, The Nationals Member for Murray Valley, Ken Jasper, said today. A strong supporter of passenger rail services, Mr Jasper has strongly supported the investment by the State and Federal Governments in implementing the upgrade of rail services to North East Victoria. He said early completion of the standard gauge track had resulted in confidence the remaining works, including the necessary signalling works, would be completed on time to allow the return of passenger rail services in the latter part of 2010.
It appears now that there are a number of hold-ups, including some safety issues, which must be addressed immediately by V-Line and the State Government, to ensure passenger rail services are reinstated on time and passengers can enjoy the promised high standard, high speed service with appropriate safety, Mr Jasper said. Surely V-Line, together with the Australian Rail Track Corporation, can coordinate the completion of the range of issues outstanding to ensure passengers are not inconvenienced any further, he said. North East rail passengers have endured almost two years of bus and rail services, changing services at Seymour and rightfully have high expectations of an upgraded service returning soon. I am confident that North East passengers will strongly support the new passenger rail service, noting the high support for the sub-standard service which was previously offered. People are looking for the safety and comfort of a high standard, high speed rail service and a safer alternative to travelling by road between North East Victoria an Melbourne, Mr Jasper said. We don’t want this upgrade to end up as another disaster like the MYKI fiasco experienced in Melbourne. |
